Windows Vista

Start (left bottom corner)

Control Panel

Change Keyboards or other input methods under Clock, Language and Region

Change Keyboards

Add: Chinese Simplified QUANPIN

2. To Type Chinese:

Open a text editor (word), and then press the keys Ctrl and Spacebar together. On the right side of the taskbar, there should be a language bar set to CH. Make sure it is set to Chinese Simplified QUANPIN. If you see a small keyboard next to CH, then click on it and set it to Chinese Simplified QUANPIN.

On order to type Chinese, type the pinyin of the character, and then search for the word in the provided menu. You can browse different menus using the page up and page down buttons. To input the word, you can type the number; click on the word; or if it is the first character of the menu, you can simply press spacebar.

* If any character uses the pinyin "ü", you need to type "v" instead. For example:  绿green (lǜ as lv)、驴donkey (lǘ as lv) female (nǚ as nv),etc.

3. Pinyin

After setting to Chinese Simplified QUANPIN, there should be a small menu on the bottom left of the screen for Chinese input. Right click on the small keyboard and select 拼音from the menu. Using the keyboard on the bottom right of the screen, type the needed vowels. Consonants can be typed in English mode.

* For some reason, Vista’s QUANPIN v.6.0 does not have this option. If you are using Word, you can go the insert→ symbol, and search from there.
